Poplar

Poplar (Populus spp.) is a rare and atmospheric note appreciated for its soft, balsamic warmth and gentle woody depth. Extracted primarily from the buds or resin of poplar trees—especially species like Populus balsamifera or Populus nigra—this note reveals a honeyed, slightly leathery sweetness reminiscent of beeswax, tolu balsam, and sunlit bark. In perfumery, Poplar offers a smooth, amber-inflected woodiness with traces of vanillic resin, soft smoke, and dried herbs. Often found in the base, it lends a natural roundness to compositions, bridging florals and woods with quiet richness and a resinous golden glow.

History & Production: Traditionally used in herbal medicine and European balms, poplar bud absolute—sometimes called Balm of Gilead—has been valued for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. The aromatic extract is typically produced via solvent extraction of the sticky buds gathered in early spring. Though less common in modern perfumery, Poplar is cherished by niche houses for its ability to add a natural, enveloping softness to compositions. It pairs beautifully with amber, labdanum, vanilla, and leather, adding both texture and subtle sweetness—like the scent of sun-warmed forest wood carried on a breeze.
